A Place of Refuge, A Path to Dignity

After escaping abuse and homelessness, L finds safety, dignity, and hope through compassionate support and refuge

At SHOC, we support people facing some of the most difficult moments in their lives. We understand that reaching out for help can be overwhelming, especially for those experiencing domestic abuse, homelessness, isolation, or fear.

Recently, we supported someone who arrived at SHOC after being advised by the police to seek emergency support. They had experienced prolonged domestic abuse, coercion and isolation after coming to the UK and found themselves homeless, frightened and with no access to public funds or family support.

When they arrived, they were extremely distressed and unsure where to turn. Our team provided a calm, safe and non-judgemental environment where they were able to speak openly about her experiences for the first time.

Through patience, reassurance and compassionate support, they were able to explain the situation they had been living in and the risks they had faced.

The SHOC team worked closely with partner agencies to ensure they received immediate support and protection. This included helping them access emergency accommodation, supporting them to speak with Adult Social Services and specialist domestic abuse services and helping them obtain immigration advice regarding their status and entitlement to support. Safe refuge accommodation was secured away from the local area to reduce risk and help them begin rebuilding their life in safety.

Within a short period of time, the individual was safely settled into refuge accommodation and was able to begin resolving their immigration status and accessing the support they were entitled to. They later shared how important it had been to feel listened to, believed and treated with dignity during such a traumatic time. They explained that without the support they received, they may have had no option but to return to a dangerous situation.

At SHOC, we are committed to being a safe place for all, regardless of background, nationality, immigration status, gender, or personal circumstances. Everyone deserves to feel safe, heard and supported and we are proud to work alongside local services and agencies to help people move forward from crisis towards safety and stability.
